The $500 Golf Bag Challenge: Mix New and Used Clubs
Can you put together a useful golf setup around a $500 target? Start with the clubs you need, compare new and used listings, and see what the available inventory can build. Mix My Bag gives you a starting mix you can change one item at a time.
Open Mix My Bag and choose the $500 target →
Before you start: $500 is a target, not a guaranteed ceiling. Prices are catalog snapshots, and the retailer confirms the exact specifications, condition, availability and final price. This is a shopping discovery tool, not a club fitting.
The challenge: four buying slots, then only the extras you want
With no add-ons selected, the first mix has a driver, hybrid, iron set and putter. The default iron configuration is 4–PW. Your iron set contains multiple clubs, so four buying slots does not mean four individual clubs.
- Irons: check the actual set composition, handedness, shaft and condition. The pitching wedge is already part of a 4–PW set.
- Driver: confirm hand, loft, shaft flex and length. A lower listing price is only useful if the club is the configuration you want.
- Putter: check the listing’s length, handedness where applicable, condition and included accessories.
- Hybrid: confirm loft and specifications rather than treating every hybrid as interchangeable.
The initial mix prioritizes spending across irons, driver, putter and hybrid. A new driver with used irons—or a used driver with a new putter—is a valid mix. The condition follows each listing; new and used clubs can appear together.
Build, change one club, then compare
- Choose $500, gender and handedness. Pick the iron-set configuration before generating. Men’s and women’s selections stay separate; clubs must match the selected hand. Availability can limit a combination.
- Leave optional extras off for the first comparison. Generate the four core slots and read the total and its difference from the target.
- Use Roll Again on one item. Other displayed clubs stay in place. A replacement can cost less or more, so watch the updated total rather than expecting every roll to save money.
- Try Roll Entire Bag when you want a different starting mix. It is useful for comparing how the target is distributed across the whole setup.
- Check the actual retailer listing. Confirm the exact configuration and delivered cost before deciding an item belongs in your final set.
Choose extras at the right time
You can optionally add a 50°, 52°, 54°, 56°, 58° or 60° wedge, a fairway wood or a new golf bag. Add only what you need. If you already own a bag or wedge, you can leave that option off.
Before generation: selected extras share the original target with the core clubs. If the matching inventory cannot land near the target, the displayed total shows the actual result.
After generation: a newly selected extra is appended without replacing the existing clubs. Its price adds to the total. Removing it removes that extra; it does not rebalance your original clubs.
What if a $500 mix costs more than $500?
The result reflects the matching inventory available to the generator. Use the displayed difference from your target to judge it. Try a different mix, remove an optional extra, or explore another target. Do not treat the target as a promise of current retailer pricing or stock.
The same process works with the $1,000 and $1,500 presets, or a positive custom target. A larger target gives you a different search to explore; it does not guarantee a particular model or performance result.
Save the mix, then shop by retailer
Save the bag or individual items to Saved Picks. Your bookmarks are stored in that browser; clearing its data can remove them. You can return to an item’s onsite listing or follow its exact tracked retailer link.
Saved Picks is a review list, not one combined retailer cart. Items may come from different sellers. Each retailer handles its own checkout, shipping, taxes, returns and final availability. The displayed bag total is a catalog total; confirm the amount you will actually pay at checkout.
Buying a golf gift? Start with the recipient
A club is a specification-sensitive gift. Confirm the golfer’s handedness, preferred configuration and relevant shaft or length details before buying. Use this challenge to compare possibilities with them, rather than guessing their fit. For Christmas purchases, check the retailer’s current delivery terms before relying on an arrival date.
Try it and compare the trade-offs
The useful result is a mix you understand: which items are new or used, where the target went, and what you would change. Keep a mix you like in Saved Picks, then confirm its exact items with the retailers.
